Farming Due Diligence

There are a lot of myths and misunderstandings about Jatropha Curcas.  The Internet is full of misinformation.

Often Farmers and promoters have sought to cash in on the jatropha gold rush. Others have wisely dismissed the idea that "jatropha can produce a good harvest in climatic conditions as is believed by many who invest in large scale production of the crop..."1 In many cases seeds are given out without farming guidance, seeds are improperly planted, or the farm is not managed.

This had made it difficult for investors to evaluate a prospective farming operation. Abundant Biofuels has created the Farming Due Diligence Program.

Abundant Biofuels Consulting can assist inventors to:

     1. Evaluate the farming experience of the

         management team

     2. Test the financial forecasts

     3. Analyze the value chain

     4. Establish reasonable valuation

MYTH 1: Jatropha Curcas can grow anywhere, preferably on marginal soils.   Jatropha is often found as a weed, and it can survive in marginal conditions. In order for it to become a “living oil well,” it needs state-of-the-art plant science and agronomy to produce the yields from marginal soils that are needed to compete with fossil fuels. Abundant Biofuels has put together one of the best plant science and agronomy teams in the world to assure that the jatropha crop yields from their plantations will be among the highest in the world.

MYTH 2: The Jatropha plant does not need fertilizer.   The jatropha plant can survive in low-nutrient conditions. However higher nutrient levels produces better growth and oil production.

MYTH 3: The jatropha tree is a hardy, pest free tree.   It is true that the jatropha tree is a hardy tree and has fewer pests.  However it is not entirely pest- or disease-free. Like any cash crop, it requires good farming skills and a team that recognizes potential problems, initiating timely corrective action.
